SHSM: Arts and Culture
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an enhanced program that is certified by the Ministry of Education. Upon completion of the program, your diploma is given a “red seal” to indicate completion of a SHSM. SHSM is recognized by Universities and Colleges throughout Ontario.
The SHSM program is ideal for any student who loves music – both those who are considering a music-related career and those who have other career ambitions.
Students can register for this program in either grade 11 or 12.
SHSM Program Outline
2 Grade 11 Arts Courses (music, visual arts, dance, or drama)
2 Grade 12 Arts Courses (music, visual arts, dance, or drama)
Additional Required Courses
Co-Op (2 credit) – this can be completed in grade 11, grade 12, 5th year, or at Summer School
1 elective course which must be selected from a broad list of Grade 11 and 12 Business and Social Science classes.
Other Features of the Specialist High Skills Major:
Integrated Units: Arts-related assignments in your additional required courses (see above) allow you to integrate your knowledge and interests in different settings.
Certificates: earn free certification for First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS plus at least 3 elective certificates pertaining to the Arts sector
Experiential Learning and Reach Ahead Activities: Go beyond high school in workplace, college and university settings.

Behind the scenes look at Centre in the Square: Canada's 2nd largest stage, one of the top concert facilities for sound quality in the world.
Behind the Scenes KW Symphony Tour - November 2013
Innovate (music stream) and SHSM A&C Students were able to meet many managers and employees that work behind the scenes within the KW Symphony Organization including leaders and/or representatives from:
· Operations Department
· Artistic and Orchestral Operator
· Building Management
· Orchestra Librarian
· Personnel Management
· Development Department (Sponsor Relations)
· Audience Engagement
· Patron Management
· Education Department
The people we interviewed had a variety of backgrounds including a passion for the arts, bachelor degrees in English, Art, History, and/or Music
The highlight was hearing the last 20 minutes of a rehearsal for Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony.
